Imagine stumbling upon a family of helpless kittens living in the most unimaginable conditions. Talin Aintablian, a dedicated cat rescuer from California, came face to face with this heartbreaking situation. Aintablian had always been able to aid the kittens and cats she encountered, but this time it was different. Underneath a shipping container, she discovered a family of cats struggling to survive.
The environment surrounding and under the cargo containers was filthy and dusty, posing serious health risks to the tiny kittens. Aintablian knew she needed help, so she reached out to Hope for Paws, a renowned Los Angeles-based rescue group.
Eldad Hagar, the creator of Hope for Paws, responded to the distress call. Hagar explained, “I’ve helped her rescue animals in the past, and she contacts me from time to time when she meets hard situations.” With a sense of urgency, Hagar and Aintablian worked together to secure the adult cats.
Although the cats were wild and had likely spent their entire lives on the streets, they were finally safely recovered. However, the mother and her kittens remained hidden beneath the shipping container, making the rescue mission even more challenging.
“We couldn’t get to the kittens or the mother,” Hagar explained. Determined not to give up, he reached out to his colleagues, Lisa Arturo and JoAnn Wiltz, who brought him the necessary specialized rescue equipment. With their assistance, the mother was saved, but the kittens were still trapped.
Hagar vividly recalls the difficult conditions they faced during the rescue. “It was really dusty, disgusting, and there were remains of dead rats and mice,” he said. With great care and patience, they painstakingly cleared the dirt from beneath the container to prevent the kittens from inhaling the harmful particles.
Finally, after a delicate operation, the three little kittens were safely retrieved and brought out into the open air for the first time in their short lives. Their remarkable rescue brought a glimmer of hope to their once dire situation.
The entire family was promptly taken to the vet for a thorough examination. Fortunately, they all tested negative for feline AIDS (FIv) and feline leukemia (FeLv), which was a major concern given their previous street life. The adult cats underwent spaying, neutering, and vaccination before being released back into their colony, as they were wild and unable to be adopted.
On the other hand, the kittens, still young enough to be adopted, are presently being fostered. They are receiving round-the-clock care, including bottle-feeding and tender affection. During the day, the kittens have the pleasure of staying at the office, with Lisa’s pit bull/boxer mix, Olivia, taking on the role of the perfect babysitter.
When the time comes, the adoption process for the kittens will be overseen by the Room 8 Memorial Cat Foundation, ensuring that they find their forever homes.
This heartwarming rescue story is a testament to the dedication and compassion of rescuers like Talin Aintablian and Eldad Hagar.
