Cats and riddles have many things in common; they can both be perplexing, curious and fun!

It seems apt then that we combine the two with a selection of hand-picked feline-related riddles.

1. How To Get A Dog, Cat & Mouse Across The River

A man has to take a dog a cat and a mouse across a river on a boat, he can only take one animal across at a time. If he takes the dog the cat will eat the mouse, if he takes mouse the dog will eat the cat.

How does he get the three animals across the river?

Answer
First he takes the cat over, then he goes back and takes the mouse over, he then takes the cat back with him and swaps it for the dog. This leaves the dog and mouse together (the dog won’t eat the mouse) while he goes to get the cat. Job done!

2. Who Killed The Kitten?

Once upon a time, there was a happy family who lived in a circular house, the family consisted of mum, dad, a chef, a maid, a brother, a sister and a small kitten called Cheryl.

Mum and dad went out one evening but, sadly, when they came back Cheryl the kitten had died.

Everyone was asked what they were doing that evening to find out who was responsible for the kitten’s demise.

The brother said he was watching TV with his sister, the sister confirmed this.

The maid said she busy all evening dusting the corners of the house.

The chef said he had spent the evening preparing a devon crab to make into a delicious Samundari Khazana Curry which he planned on serving the following night.

Who was responsible for the kitten’s death?

The maid – her story couldn’t have been true because there were no corners in the house – it was circular.

3. Amy’s Cats

Amy loves cats and has some as pets.

All but two of them are completely white.

All but two of them are completely black.

All but two of them are completely brown.

How many cats does Amy have?

5. Who Owns The Cat?

Which of the girls in the picture below is the cat’s owner?

The girl in the middle, you can tell from the cat damage to the front of her tights. Cats are less likely to scratch the back of your leg as this sort of behaviour is a cry for attention so they will usually approach from the front.

6. The Big Cat & The Little Cat Riddle

Two cats are sitting on a windowsill, a big cat and a little cat. The little cat is the son of the big cat, but the big cat is not the father of the little cat.

How is this possible?

7. What Is The Mothers Name?

I have a cat that has 3 kittens: Mopsy, Topsy & Spot.

While on my way to St Ives I saw a man with 7 wives, each wife had 7 sacks, each sack had 7 cats and each cat had 7 kittens.

How many in total were going to St Ives?

What is 3/7 chicken, 2/3 cat and 1/2 goat?
